About

Tony had a record shop. It was called Too Tone Records. It was in Dunedin, New Zealand. It had little or no online presence. Tony was Bored and decided to inflict THAT part of being in music retail on the world at large.

…it’s 2021 and the shop has been closed for more than 3 years….

…Tony has finally updated his about page…

…Tony now drives a big loader at the local waste transfer station….

…and paints in his spare time….

…he continues to blog occasionally.

    • …a trail of minuscule avatars… I’m always trying to look for interesting bits and pieces…visual stimulation in a static environment….and I’ve got way too much time on my hands!

    • …ooo… just realised…scoped your stuff whilst checking out “sketchbook” tag to see if something I’d posted was showing up…. damn… now I turned into one of those blurty/gushy posters!…love your stuff…

  1. Hi, I’ve nominated you for a Wonderful Team Member Award! : )

  2. glad you looked at my work and i found your blog, made me laugh!

  3. You have a real store huh? I didn’t know there were real stores anywhere anymore, but happy to hear it! I will have swim from my island to yours one day and buy some vinyl! (My island being Manhattan.)

    • …thats a loooong swim…use the Panama canal for a short cut..
… I’ve shopped for vinyl in Manhattan…it’s loaded with record shops…check the yellow pages…I did…and spent waaaay to much…

  4. Thanks for liking my stuff. Are you really that bored? I don’t think so…Must check out your store.

  5. William

Heh. Likeamagnet and I will have to carpool. I’m in Atlanta.

  6. Hi Tony, thanks for the Like on the mermaid comic (there will be mermaids later, I promise)! Thanks for finding me because I love your comics! Are you using coloured pencils? The colours are wonderful! I’d come visit your shop, but I too would have to swim from island to island (I’m on Vancouver Island).

    • …Hi Karen….love your stuff likewise….it’s an awful long way to swim…might I recommend an aeroplane??….coloured pencils indeed…and pressing harder than is recommended!….see you in the funny pages…(or the next tide!)….T

  7. Thanks! Haha, yes, and I don’t swim so well. There used to be a funny thing in Google Maps, where if you asked it how to get from Seattle to China, it would tell you take a kayak when you got to the Pacific Ocean. Alas, it’s not there anymore. But I do have a kayak! I very much like your style; coloured pencils are so unusual in comics (partly because they take so long!). I look forward to seeing more!

    • …maybe too many folk tried the kayak option!!…colouring in pencils don’t take so long if you spent a life time doing process work!!!…I can scribble real fast…an A4 page takes about an hour…. : )

  8. Haha, maybe so!
That IS some fast scribbling! What kind of paper do you like to work on? I often use something called Stonehenge here, don’t knwo if you can get it where you are. It’s a nice thick drawing or printmaking sheet, with a nice tooth to it.

    • …um…I’ve cut the covers off the A4 blocks I favour….it’s just generic acid free stuff that’s on the school book lists…worked in the printing industry for quite a number of years and you’d think I’d have a better regard for the materials I use…but no…I just grab what’s cheap & cheerful & back stuff on to it…(oh dear…giving away state secrets….)….

  9. Heehee. Lately I’ve become a fan of the paper I use in my ink-jet printer for ink drawing. Not archival, oh dear…

    • …: ) ….when I was publishing compilation comics I preached the line “fill the space” to all my contributors…the paper doesn’t matter…so long as there’s something legible on it!…. the materials are secondary to the act of creating (comics)….

  10. True, especially since we typically turn the comics into pixels these days anyway, whether for web or print. Legibility, yes — I’m using the word “clarity” with my students to cover both image and words. Drives me crazy when I can’t tell what is going on, or I have to squint to read it! That’s one of the things I like about yours — even with all the wild stuff going on, the whole comic reads very clearly.

    Hey! You updated. Cool!

  12. Thanks for being a badass and always liking stupid shit on my blog. Keep doing what you do you Kiwi weirdo 😀 Wish I could come check out your shop. Cheers
