Ever wondered what goes on when the proprietor of secondhand record shop at the butt end of the world chucks in the towel and goes back to having a life??
…remember that record accumulation I was “administering” for Re-Store?….
…after an 18 month break…
…(nightshift/covid/life…y’know…)…..
…it’s time to get back to it….
….I’m still finding amazing stuff I’ve never seen before…
…possibly the best NZ album cover I’ve ever encountered…
…and….
…definitely the best cover I’ve seen up to this point in my life…
…pumpkins AND an octopus…
…what’s not to like?….
…(seriously…there is so much more to come from this collection…track down Dunedin Re-Stores face book page for drop dates…should be weekly at this stage…and keep an eye out for the “top shelf” crate coming to a Dunedin Re-Store counter near you!)…
…so you’ll just have to imagine what the next ten crates of fresh stuff are going to look like till 10 o’clock tomorrow morning, when they’ll be available for you to paw at with your sticky mitts, at Restore, 7 Gordon Street, Dunedin Central….
…and, yes, there will be another 10 crates next week….
…the week after that is probably the last lot…
…will keep you posted…
…(if you’re having trouble imagining what those 10 crates might look like, scroll down)….
…(is it just me, or is working 13 days in the last 14 starting to make me a little tetchy?)….
…send those weary crate digging fingers on a spa weekend…
…and more importantly, rebuild those relationships that mattered to you most before you became a record buying fiend…
…in short…
…there will be no fresh crates at Restore this week…
…I have that stinking cold that has been ravaging Dunedin over the last couple of weeks and am unable to stand in the donors garage and sort vinyl (let alone carry full crates) for the 8 hours required to provide 10 fresh crates for tomorrow morning…
…so lets all just take a step back, take a deep breath and steel ourselves for a return to the new “normal” next week…
…or you could go down tomorrow and take the opportunity to make sure you didn’t miss anything in the previous three weeks…
…how to empty the pockets and wallets of record collectors in Dunedin for a third week running…
…Step 1 :- condense records left over from last week…(place excess, if any, in crates under tables)…
…Step 2 :- fill gaps in between older crates with 10 freshly prepared crates…(mmm…fresh crates)…
…Step 3 :- let the record collectors know that they need to be up bright and early and at the doors of Restore, 7 Gordon Street, Dunedin Central at 10a.m. or they might be able afford groceries this week…
…Step 4 :- reassure the record collectors that there only are 3 (maybe 4)…(maybe 5) more weeks of 10 crate drops to endure…
…Step 5 :- avoid record collectors immediate families and employers for all of time.
…I’ve agreed to come out of record-shop-retirement to help a friend prepare his record accumulation before he donates it to charity…
…he had been moving towards setting up his own retail operation but his circumstances have changed and he’s decided to head in a different direction…
…and the reason I’m almost speechless?…
…well…
…there’s some in the kitchen….
…theres some in this part of the main hallway….
…there’s some in the living room…
…there’s some in the hallway that goes to the second toilet and bathroom….
…there’s some right down the other part of the main hallway…
….there’s some in this bedroom…
…and there’s some in this bedroom….
…there’s also some in the master bedroom and the laundry that I didn’t photograph….
….then there’s the garage….
….it’s a four car garage….
…before I’d taken these pic’s we’d already cleared some work space in the front half of the garage….condensing and stacking as we went to create this….
…a forty two crate wall of vinyl….
…I’d worked through some boxes the previous week to access how long it will take to clear…
…all sorted to price specific crates ready for stickering….
…(three to four crates an hour with my friends assistance…in case you were wondering)…
…price brackets of $5/$10/$20 with a smattering of $30….
…(anything over $30 will go online, with the proceeds after fees also going to the charity)…
…then we cleared most of the hallway to take the wall to 70…
….I’d guesstimate that this is more or less 5000 discs…
…it’s probably about half of what is in the house….
…it’s a third as much again as what I used to have in the shop at any one time…(we all remember the shop, right?)…
…it’s going to take a whole bunch of Saturdays to get thru them all….
…we have processed 16 full crates to date…
….the recipient charity shop will be making space available for 20 crates…
…those 20 crates will be getting restocked for many months to come…
…there are no more lps to put in the recent arrivals bin….
…everything is now filed in the “General Alphabetical” or its respective “Genre” bins……so I’ve invented this……Ladies & Gentlemen I give you the “Recent Removals” bin…stock buried in the stacks…passed over (& over) for the last 18 months or so… destined to be thrown to the Trade Me wolves…but maybe worth one more flick thru…
…de-digit your sphincters….
…only 6 more Too Tone days until the end of reality as I know it.
