101 Uses For Sharks That I Can Now Draw

…oh yes, drawing sharks is going to come in handy…

Scan 137

…as handy as being able to draw coelacanths…

Scan 138

…the practical applications are endless…

…especially considering my up coming series…

…”Henges that didn’t survive the millennia”.

…(oh yeah….200 posts…woohoo!)

International Avoid The Finished Art Work Week

…I’m posting a bunch of images from the sketch book this week, that sort of tidy up a few of the “themes” that I’ve been playing with, before I go off on a thematic tangent that has got me nervous…

…some of you may recognise these coelacanths from the “Duck! Duck! Duck!” series… (some of you may need to check the archives)…Scan 95

…what am I nervous about?…

…wait till Friday.

Coelacanths And Unflattering Representations Of New Zealand Politicians

…wow… my longest title so far…and for good reason…Scan 65

…as we move into the next “arc” of the sketchbook we find our intrepid artist exploring the logistics of covering coelacanths with retro wallpaper patterns whilst becoming increasingly incensed with the New Zealand Governments behaviour towards the good citizens of Christchurch….(circa November 2012)

…one minister in particular…

…who, if filled with the right gas, could potentially float away….

…I shan’t name him, but will point out that it is very hard to blend his moniker and the word “ballon” together.

The Making Of Coelacanth! Coelacanth! Coelacanth!

…it has been one of those days today….

….one of those days when you were expecting to get stuff done but  one thing leads to another and suddenly you find that the photos you were going to post next are still on the camera, the camera is beside the table, the table is at home in the living room….and you … you are at work…

…damn…

….so here’s what I was going to post tomorrow after the plaudits for Coelacanth! Coelacanth! Coelacanth! started rolling in….

…without further ado… the sketchbook pages leading up to Coelacanth! Coelacanth! Coelacanth!… the thrills and spills of having an idea and running with it…

…the intricacies of which way the little fish in the background should point…
Scan 50

…the getting side tracked with wether or not to cover the damn things in scales or wall paper patterns…

Scan 51

…the slowly drifting closer to the final product…

Scan 52

….and finally the “roughing-out” of the background so you can see if it works the way you imagine it….Scan 53

…and why coelacanths?….

…Cousin Phil saw a preserved coelacanth in a museum in France…  I think it’s the one that the fisherman found that reintroduced the coelacanth to the scientific world and gave us the term “living fossil”…

…Phil was so taken with it he named his house “Coelacanth”…

…I have visited said museum and seen said coelacanth…amazing…

….an inspiration to us all…

… to keep a low profile or some one will “discover”  us and we’ll end up floating in a tank of coelacanth-embalming-goo.
