Still Avoiding That Finished Artwork

… gonna build up to it like it was the coolest thing.

…here’s a stray from the “Duck! Duck! Duck! series…. it was tentatively titled “Madonna’s Den Wallpaper”…..Scan 96

…sad eyes… ooo those sad eyes…

… they  almost had me donating to a “support a foreign kid” charity on the TV….

…till I realised the kid on the TV was a NZ kid and my tax dollars were already failing to support him/her…

…sad eyes.

(rest of the “Duck! Duck! Duck!” drawings are handily categorised …. see bottom of page….. avoid sad eye contact)

…sad eyes.

International Avoid The Finished Art Work Week

…I’m posting a bunch of images from the sketch book this week, that sort of tidy up a few of the “themes” that I’ve been playing with, before I go off on a thematic tangent that has got me nervous…

…some of you may recognise these coelacanths from the “Duck! Duck! Duck!” series… (some of you may need to check the archives)…Scan 95

…what am I nervous about?…

…wait till Friday.

Wassername! Wassername! Wassername!

…finally came out of the malaise like fog long enough this morning to finish colouring in this…Scan 57

…may have gone a bit colour blind with the illness…. you decide!

…flying skull monkeys…as we started so we endeth the Duck! Duck! Duck! cycle… except for one more which I haven’t decided if it needs doing yet….

…new idea arc tomorrow….

Dragon! Dragon! Dragon!

… sigh….

…Dragons do appear in my sketchbook on a regular basis…. my Norse forebears used to draw them on things and carve them on the front of the sea going R.V.s…. I’ve been fascinated with ancient Nordic art since I was told about my heritage as a child…prefer it to Celtic stuff…less symmetrical…Scan 45

… my life long fascination with Smaug is also a contributing factor… (nothing to do with Mr. Jacksons “Hobbit” thing at all, but keep up the good work Pete.)….

Scan 54

…trying to work out the lay-of-the-bodies freehand was problematic…same messy nightmare I struck with “Tentaclely Thing”…

…(check in the archives…)

Scan 55

…as my patience wore thinner… I came to the conclusion…

Scan 56

…I shoulda done a unicorn.

Spaceman! Spaceman! Spaceman!

… or spaceperson if you’d prefer…one of those I’m-nearly-50 speech aberrations I can’t seem to kick…”they were all spaceMEN when I was a lad”… you guys understand don’t you?…. er… (did it again didn’t I)….

Scan 44

…. crap, I probably just alienated my entire female readership…. would it make any difference if I said that the characters in the sketchbook page below are all female ….

Scan 46

…thus proving that the chicks most certainly did come before the egg-on-their -faces-guys….

The Making Of Coelacanth! Coelacanth! Coelacanth!

…it has been one of those days today….

….one of those days when you were expecting to get stuff done but  one thing leads to another and suddenly you find that the photos you were going to post next are still on the camera, the camera is beside the table, the table is at home in the living room….and you … you are at work…

…damn…

….so here’s what I was going to post tomorrow after the plaudits for Coelacanth! Coelacanth! Coelacanth! started rolling in….

…without further ado… the sketchbook pages leading up to Coelacanth! Coelacanth! Coelacanth!… the thrills and spills of having an idea and running with it…

Scan 47

…the intricacies of which way the little fish in the background should point…
Scan 50

…the getting side tracked with wether or not to cover the damn things in scales or wall paper patterns…

Scan 51

…the slowly drifting closer to the final product…

Scan 52

….and finally the “roughing-out” of the background so you can see if it works the way you imagine it….Scan 53

…and why coelacanths?….

…Cousin Phil saw a preserved coelacanth in a museum in France…  I think it’s the one that the fisherman found that reintroduced the coelacanth to the scientific world and gave us the term “living fossil”…

…Phil was so taken with it he named his house “Coelacanth”…

…I have visited said museum and seen said coelacanth…amazing…

….an inspiration to us all…

… to keep a low profile or some one will “discover”  us and we’ll end up floating in a tank of coelacanth-embalming-goo.

Sheep! Sheep! Sheep!

…..In New Zealand, when you are looking for inspiration beyond the confines of your window (nicely framed in your retro wallpaper, that no one has thought to replace since the seventies)  ….

…you probably gonna see sheep….

…we have a lot of them…Scan 32

….they may influence your “work”…

Scan 42

…but then…. so might the wallpaper…

Extrapolate! Extrapolate! Extrapolate!

…so I found myself with a design idea I could run with… who else, in their right mind, would trawl through their sketchbook to find images they could do at 3 different sizes on backgrounds inspired (ripped off?!) from retro wallpaper patterns?….

Scan 31

…. and who, you’re probably not asking, would go on to render it in brush, ink and coloured pencil….

Scan 41

…. these will all (oh yes, there are more) be tagged “Duck! Duck! Duck!” should you feel the need to look at them all at once or join in yourself…..
