…I looked out the bedroom window and noticed….

…only stumble across stick insects every once and awhile…
…I know they’re abundant in Dunedin, but they look like sticks….
…so….y’know….

….haven’t seen a brown one in forever….
…the distinct lack of articulated folk art skeletons in New Zealand has led me to experiment with clay and wire….
…early results are somewhat arthritic…
…but I’m working on it!….
…(…have to admit that this side ramble into 3d stuff is actually a direct result of wanting, but not being able to acquire an army of lego skeletons in short order….not sure why said army needs to be mine…probably just ‘cos…)…..
…(when in need, try making your own)….
….was burbling on about label makers in the comments section of a recent post when I remembered these… a pre-lockdown find at the local dump-shop….
…bargains at $4 each….
…could use those lovely bulging plastic frames for some form of art skullduggery…..
…then I noticed the over-labelling….
…kiwiana repurposed hand built diorama madness!…
…did they just make two?….
…did they have a little shop at the base of the mountain?….
…here they are out of the frames (carefully) for clarity….
….(and you all KNOW how conflicted I am….shall I peel the labels to see what they housed originally…should I be considering filling them with dioramas of my own?….how many more did the original perpetrator make?…do I have the whole set?….are these valuable examples of pre- mass produced kiwi keepsakes?…..soooo conflicted…did I mention “how many did they make”?)….
…(guess I could hang onto them till after lockdown….if you lean in real close and squint it’s almost like being in the mountains)….
This summer “just” gone….on a long ramble down the Taieri River we…myself and intrepid, inflatable boat enthusiast, Dee…. discovered bees, hundreds of them, poking about on a sand bar at the waters edge….
… coming and going to a couple of spots…like someone had performed a waggle dance back at the hive and reported that the river was running with honey….
…took us a while to figure it out…obvious really….
….this is where bees go to drink….
….went back a few months later to confirm….
….yep…this IS where bees go to drink….
…and what happens if you get too close?….
…you forget which way up you’re holding you’re camera….
(…oh, and this is a only a mile or two down river from where that tractor driver discovered the moa footprints….(google “moa footprints”)…..)
….standing in a field looking back at Kokonga Church…..
…same cloud different angle….
…currently looking at clouds instead of drawing.
…nobody told me they lay eggs….
…Eggs!
…(starting to tidy up some partially finished “octopieds” form the last 5 months or so….now that the record shop is finally gone I can start churning out art again….)
…(Moeraki boulders are a naturally occurring formation that can be seen up the coast from where I live in Dunedin….they are not eggs.)
…honk down your chimney….
…they were actually taking turns at looking down the chimney & honking….
…lucky the business that resides in this building was closed…
…not a pleasant sound at the best of times.
…I submitted this to a large compilation comic for a Canadian (I think) comics con’…
…apart from a kids book, this remains my only piece published overseas….
…er…unless you count nearly four years of world wide web stuff.
